Cyclamen, Tanigami Konan (1879-1928), Japan
This cyclamen image exemplifies the meticulous detail and rich woodblock printing technique for which Tanigami Konan is famous.
Konan was a renowned artist who, in 1917, began a series of prints of lush and exotic plants (many of them Western flowers) in a 120-plate edition. His five-volume album of traditional Japanese woodblock prints serves as a visual record of garden flowers. Although Konan’s prints were tremendously popular in the West, they have only recently received wide acceptance in Japan.
